Forza: 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to go back in time? That’s the great thing about cars. We might not be able to travel back in time, but we can experience what cars were like during different decades.

While most people joke around about how little the 911 has changed over the years, it doesn’t take long behind the “wheel” to realize the differences between this 1973 Carrera and a 2019 911 GT3 RS are night and day. Porsche has managed to improve on every aspect of the car while keeping that same unmistakable look.

It’s easy to assume that these cars handle well and are pretty quick, but that’s not the case. Heading into the first turns in Dubai, I quickly found out that this car has a trick up its sleeve. Normally, cars have either oversteer, where the back end of the car breaks loose, or understeer, where you turn the wheel, but the car struggles to turn. So what does the 911 Carrera from 1973 have? Both.

The way to handle this characteristic is to use similar techniques that are used in rally. Going through the turns requires a lot of balance between the gas and brakes. Braking transfers the weight to the front wheels and helps you gain the grip needed to get the car to turn.

With cars having so many drivers assists, it added a lot of challenges to driving the 911 Carrera. A lot of people see driving a car as getting from point a to point b as “comfortable” as possible, but that’s not what this is for. This 911 Carrera gives you a chance to really make the most out of getting from point a to point b. I’ve always been a fan of the 911 and driving the 1973 911 Carrera reminds me why I have such a passion for the 911 line. After this blast from the past, I’m now wondering what it would be like compared to a modern 911? I guess we’ll just have to find out…
